This residential building is located in the historic centre of the city. It comprises two apartments, two duplex and a retail unit on the ground floor. The facade follows a similar layout as the surrounding buildings, but alternately combines balconies and bay windows.

Building area: 500 sqm
Location: Astorga, Spain
Client: Private

The building is located in the centre of Astorga, a town in the province of León, northern Spain, a highly cultured and historical area. Its façade is oriented towards one of the main plazas of the town, from which some of the most emblematic buildings, such as the Cathedral and Gaudi’s Episcopal Palace, can be seen.

The building occupies a highly exposed corner, with a contemporary urban façade.
The skin of the block becomes a monolithic element perforated with a series of openings to capture the southern and eastern light. Windows, balconies and bay windows are combined in rhythmic fashion and create a singular pattern, which wraps around the block.

Bay windows become hanging elements made in stainless steel; the protruding balconies are cladded with a black matt metal closure while the main block is covered with a light limestone cladding.

The building program is distributed in 6 levels, including a basement and lofts. It comprises of apartments and duplex, as well as a retail unit on the ground floor and car park underneath. All the residential units are facing both the street and an internal courtyard with an outdoor staircase. This space brings light into the rear façade to the building and it works as a semi-public vertical circulation, from which the apartments can be accessed. At the ground level the courtyard turns into a garden with high trees surrounded by white walls in order to provide a light and fresh space.

The last level of the top-floor duplex apartments emerges from the main stone block as a recessed roof element, almost hidden from the street. The arrangement of the block around the patio maximizes the plot ratio and provides homogeneous lighting conditions for all the units, while the façade offers a finish, which is harmonious with the proportion of the nearby buildings.
